Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) changes for websites

The Advertising Standards Agency is bringing in new legislation to govern advertising on websites from the 1st March 2011. Up until the 1st March 2011, advertising on your own website and non-paid online marketing areas under your control (such as Facebook and Twitter) have been very loosely governed by the Advertising Standards Agency.

As of the 1st March 2011, new legislation comes into place to strictly govern these areas, to ensure marketing communications online will be kept legal, decent, honest and truthful. In short, the rules relate to misleading advertising, social responsibility and the protection of children, to help protect consumers from mis-advertising, and 'offensive' communications. Any claims made on your online marketing communications must be substantiated (with documented evidence if required) and not exaggerated.

Further information can be found on the Advertising Standards Agency website: http://www.asa.org.uk/
